Lyrics and Thoughts: Music Is The Ride Album

Everything Is Changing

Everything Is Changing

 Words and Music

by Richard Schulman

Everything is changing,

Moving so fast

Everything is changing,

Moving so fast

Everything is changing,

Moving so fast

Everything is changing,

Moving so fast

Everything is changing,

Moving so fast

Life is rearranging,

Nothing like the past

Everyone is struggling,

Sensitive, unsure

Fog and fantasy make you insecure

It's gonna work out

You just don't see it yet

A time of endings

New directions set

Everything feels

Like it's falling apart

A punch to the stomach

Your most sensitive spot

Exciting things are happening

All over the world

There's a fog on your head,

Your mind, your soul

Your secret power

Your sweet desire

You want to go higher

How did this happen

Illusions of the mind

Are there ghosts from your past

You need to unwind

It's gonna work out

You just don't see it yet

A time of endings

New directions set

Everything's revealed

Where you were lost

Where you ran away

What was the cost

Everything's confusing

Doesn't make sense

What you have been losing

Sitting on a fence.

Everything is changing,

Moving so fast

Everything is changing,

Moving so fast

Everything is changing,

Moving so fast

Everything is changing,

Moving so fast

Dr Dreamwalker here. . . I wrote this song several years ago never realizing how apropos it would be for today. I once wrote, "In a dream it all seems real, Wake it swiftly goes away. We resist all and any changes. Everything changes anyway." This was written at a time in my life when I had to come to terms with extreme changes I was resisting, had a resulting ego death, and things improved markedly. A tough go, no doubt, but I wouldn't give it back. Extreme changes have been pushed on all of us and we have to figure out how to respond.

The Chinese pictogram for crisis has two pictures, danger and opportunity. We are in crisis and have to deal with it, but there is opportunity for positive change. If we can approach this time lovingly we have a chance. Anger and conflict will destroy us.

Recording this song was a blast. I got to use my Rickenbacker 12 string to give it a little 60s jangle. I used a Fender Stratocaster in the background and a Gretsch Tennessee Rose to give it those Who-like blasts. We used both a six string and 12 string acoustics to give the song a full sound, which is seen throughout the album. Debbie's harmonies and background vocals are so much fun as is Tony's lead. I wanted it to sound like a 60s song and I think we made it.

As you go through the album you'll notice that the songs have many different flavors of sound. Patrick and I chose different combinations of both acoustic and electric guitars for the background and Tony used several different guitars for his leads. I loved experimenting with the sounds and finding the guitars that expressed the feeling behind the song.

Don't Give Me A Second Thought (Let Me Be Your First)

Don't Give Me A Second Thought

(Let Me Be Your First)

Words and Music

by Debbie Stern and Steve Frey

If you’re needing

Somebody to talk to

You’re tired to talking to the wall

Pick up the phone,

You can reach me at home

It’s never too late to call

If you’re worn and torn

Like a worn-out shoe

Your bubbles

Getting ready to burst

Don’t give me a second thought

Baby let me be your first

Please don’t change your mind,

When things are getting worse

Don’t give me a second thought,

Baby let me be your first

You know I can understand you

When no one takes the time to

Listen to your problems

Please know that I’m there

Please know that I care

If you’re wanting somebody

To hold you

I’d like to rock your cares away

Hold on tight,

I’ll make you feel alright

And look forward to a better day

Please don’t change your mind,

When things are getting worse

Don’t give me a second thought,

Baby let me be your first

You know I can understand you

When no one takes the time to

Listen to your problems

Please know that I’m there

Please know that I care

We tend to second doubt our decisions in life. I have always been taught to make your decisions, trust your intuition and move ahead Don't look back. When it comes to relationships, and you feel comfortable around the person you love, this song is saying,

"Allow me to be your number one persons to go to in times of trouble and in times of joy.

We always want to share our thoughts and be around people we love. So do not doubt that little voice in you head saying..."call, reach out" Allow that person to share your life and your thoughts. Don't second guess yourself...go with your first thought!

Debbie Stern

This song is so bright and upbeat I just love it. Debbie orchestrated the background vocals and Dave Ross and I did the singing round at the end. It sounds a little like a Beatles song to me, and that's pretty high praise.

The Outsider

The Man In Black Staring at me. The Outsider

The Outsider

Words and Music

by Richard Schulman

I’m the outsider,

A stranger wherever I go

All faces become the same

No one knows

Or remembers my name

The secret password

Promising wisdom and light

War, depression, revolutions,

Religious insight

A surface sideshow

Don’t trust appearances

Issues, emotions, desires,

Myth, magic and pyramids

I’m the outsider,

A stranger wherever I go

All faces become the same

No one knows

Or remembers my name

The tip of an iceberg

Mostly hidden below

Holding precious knowledge

All would like to know

Humans without hope

No one to hear their pleas

Stockpiled bombs, toxic waste

The next unknown disease

They are scared want to run and hide

A truth they are unprepared

To take inside

They are scared want to run and hide

A truth they are unprepared

To take inside

Power and purpose, icons and images

Secrets and plans,

Designed to be out of their hands

Who killed JFK?,

Who made coronavirus?

Relics from the past

What is fact? Fiction?  Don’t ask

I’m the outsider,

A stranger wherever I go

All faces become the same

No one knows

Or remembers my name

No one knows

Or remembers my name

The Outsider is my sci-fi western, sort of Johnny Cash meets the X-Files. You are not supposed to have favorite songs like you are not supposed to like one child better than another, but this one is special to me. It started with the idea that Jesus was off planet and came around to check things out and no one recognized him. Considering it was written in 2014 the idea of "the next unknown disease" has a chilling clairvoyant effect, and it was simple to slightly rewrite to "who made coronavirus?" in the last verse. Conspiracy theory? Looking back, perhaps not so much theory anymore. Daniel Polyak, our Heartbeat was really on this one, thank you brother, Debbie Stern's background vocals and harmonies were different and exactly what the song needed, and somehow Tony Sheppard bridges the gap between the country western and sci-fi in his amazing guitar.

I Think I Think Too Much

I Think I Think Too Much

Words and Music

by Debbie Stern and Steve Frey

I get the urge

To give you a call sometimes

To see if I still feel those butterflies

But then I think,

I must be out of my mind

To think that you’ll still love me

I hear a knock

But nobody’s at my door

It’s just the wind,

Colder than ever before

The thought of you

And all that you mean to me

It is true,

That you don’t want me

I think

I think too much about you

Your memory walks right in

And throws a party

At night when I get home,

I turn your memory on

And think too much about you

Oh, I could swear

That you’re in my room at night

I reach out

To kiss your lips goodnight

But it’s a game,

Just a trick that I use

To ease the pain

Of being without you

I think

I think too much about you

Your memory walks right in

And throws a party

At night when I get home,

I turn your memory on

And think too much about you

Thoughts of you

Keep playing on my mind…

A broken heart

Skipping out of time

I need to turn you off

And get on without you

I think

I think too much about you

Your memory walks right in

And throws a party

At night when I get home,

I turn your memory on

And think too much about you

Have you ever had a song stuck in your head? You end up hearing it in your dreams. HINT: Try reading a book before bed instead of music! When you love someone, their soul resonates in your heart. You can feel their presence even when they are not with you.
